Karnataka Plans 1,000 MW 'Sustainable' Data Centre Parks at Bengaluru, Mysuru, & Mangaluru

The Karnataka government has decided to establish three sustainable data parks to support energy-efficient and scalable IT infrastructure, further boosting cities like Mysuru and Mangaluru.

Karnataka is taking a massive leap in IT readiness by establishing three 'sustainable' data centre parks at Bengaluru, Mysuru, and Mangaluru. The combined capacity of these parks aims to reach 1,000 megawatts (MW), reinforcing the state's status as India's technology powerhouse.

The Need for Sustainable Infrastructure

Data centres are essential for emerging technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI) and machine learning, but they are also known as heavy energy and water consumers. To combat the environmental impact, the Karnataka government's initiative emphasizes eco-friendly approaches. For example, a 500 MW sustainable data centre park planned near Hoskote in Bengaluru will be powered directly by solar energy generated at Pavagada.

Additionally, water management will primarily leverage treated water, ensuring that primary water grids are not strained. This shows a forward-thinking design model perfectly catered toward minimizing carbon footprints while increasing scalability.

Mangaluru & Mysuru Step into the Spotlight

While Bengaluru continues its robust tech expansion, the inclusion of Mangaluru and Mysuru is pivotal. The government has identified 350 acres belonging to the Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board (KIADB) at the Baikampady Industrial Area in Mangaluru for the second data centre park. Corresponding land suited for the third data centre park will be identified in Mysuru, reflecting the state's strong intent to decentralize its tech hubs.

What This Means for Real Estate and Enterprises

Uninterrupted power supply and ample provisions for cooling infrastructure will make these integrated parks highly lucrative for global investors. For real estate ventures, manufacturing clusters, and IT companies eyeing regional growth, investing in robust Grade-A IT parks in tech corridors adjacent to these proposed data centers provides a tremendous competitive edge.

A Vision for Tomorrow

The push towards 1-gigawatt (total electrical load capacity) 'green' servers speaks volumes about Karnataka's ambition. By marrying innovation with sustainability, these data centre parks represent precisely the type of infrastructural commitment companies look out for when deciding where their next flagship expansions lie.
